This very useful shader allows you to assign different materials for reflection, refraction, transparency, final gathering, shadows etc. It can also be used to speed up final gathering by using a simplified material for the FG precomp, and then using your actual material for the render.

This material shader allows you to adjust FG, GI and caustic parameters individually by material. It is similar to ctrl_irradiance, but for Max.

Besides adjusting FG, GI and caustics, it has an additional feature called 'fast sky light' which multiplies FG occlusion by a simple color to simulate lighting from the sky.

Ghost Settings unlocks a few hidden features in mental ray 3.8+ (only ships with Max 2011), namely importons and irradiance particles.

Importons can be used as an importance based merging function for global illumination photons, or by Irradiance Particles when both GI and FG are disabled. Irradiance Particles (short: IP) is a global illumination technique which, in many cases, is superior to final gather and/or photon mapping in terms of image quality, usability and performance.
